The Netherlands brings solar to people’s homes
Utrecht, 25th January 2008. On 28th January, just before the start of the European Sustainable Energy week, the first "European Solar Days" will be officially opened during a press conference in Brussels. This awareness program is a European initiative organised by the solar energy industry for promotion of the use of the sun as an important source of energy. The 'European Solar Days' will take place on the 16th and the 17th May. As one of the 10 participating countries, the Netherlands is preparing themselves for these two days, dedicated to the sun. Solar energy is an effective and easy way for everyone to contribute to a better environment. In order to get this message across, several events are being organised on the topic of solar photovoltaic and solar thermal.
Solar Thermal is a technology to generate sustainable energy from the sun for heating or cooling purposes. Photovoltaic is using the radiation from the sun to generate electricity. "Holland Solar", the Dutch association for solar industry, is the organiser of the 'European Solar Days' in the Netherlands. Holland Solar represents 43 members ranging from manufacturers to installers and from architects to energy providers, all of them actively involved in the field of solar energy in the Netherlands. The solar energy industry is ready to open their doors, and show how to bring solar to the home, this year.
The 'European Solar Days' also unites market players from the European solar thermal and photovoltaic industry, which is beneficial for the further development of the market. In addition, the program contributes to increasing the awareness to the broad public of the opportunities for using the sun as a source of energy.
The first 'Tag der Sonne' was celebrated in Austria in 2001. The idea was then taken up by Switzerland and Germany where, in the case of Germany a whole week is now dedicated to this successful renewable energy awareness-raising campaign.
It is now time to bring the Solar Days to the rest of Europe – with Belgium, Italy, France, the Netherlands, Portugal, Spain and Slovenia ready to go in 2008. Other countries are expected to join the initiative in 2009 and it is planned to extend the Solar Days throughout Europe in the future. The European Solar Days will bring together major players from the solar thermal and solar electricity sectors throughout Europe
The European Sustainable Energy Week (EUSEW) is an annual European event, too. During one week, from Monday 28th January until Friday 1st February 2008, several work shops, lectures, conferences and presentations on the topic of sustainable energy will take place in Brussels.
